Biography

Steve is one of the international show jumping world’s prodigies. He had the passion and talent needed, as well as the luck of having a father who was an international rider and coach who abandoned his own career to assist his son and a mother obviously supports and encourages him, as well as a brother who takes care of all marketing and communications aspects. All this resulted in him becoming the youngest rider in history (aged 20) to make the top 20 in the world (12thin  2002) and win Olympic gold by the time he was 30 (London 2012 – riding Nino de Buissonet). In addition to his father, the two men who played the most important roles in his technical and sporting success have been Thomas Fuchs and Beat Meandli – amazing riders as well as wonderful trainers and horsemen with a profound cultural background. Guerdat now runs his own stables in Switzerland near Zurich; “Having my own yard was a dream, and now this dream has come true. It is heaven for the horses.” On his way to the top he also worked for a time in Valkenswaard at the stables run by Jan Tops (former Olympic rider and the owner of one of the most important sports yards in the world as well as founder of the Global Champions Tour) just like Italy’s wonderful Alberto Zorzi.
