Biography

Lorenzo’s super powers are his love for horses,  his passion for this sport and his total commitment to the work done with his horses. Born to a family that had never had anything to do with horses, he started to ride when he was nine and first jumped in shows when he was eleven. After finishing school, aged eighteen he left his family to ride and to prove to his father that it would be worth it. From then on his rise never stopped; he travelled further and further north and higher and higher in the world ranking. Now he is the top rider at one of the best stables on the planet (Stephex Stables, in Belgium) and the first Italian rider in the world to make the top ten of world show jumping becoming Number Two for a while in 2017!

His idols are the legendary German rider Marcus Ehning and Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, while his mentor is the former international rider and trainer Henk Nooren, about who he said in an interview “he is 99% of my riding”. He is a fan of “good” riding but also cares a lot about results. When he knocks a fence down in a jump off he “goes mad” and is unable to speak to anyone for an hour.

So as to understand the bond he establishes with his horses it is worth reading his own words. “Perhaps I over do things, I become very close to my horses… perhaps too close, I am the Italian part of the stables; they always see me hugging my horses with my hands full of lumps of sugar… . When my horses jump a clear round I hug them as if they were children…It matters greatly to me… horses always repay you everything. It is nice to be fond of horses that do exceptional things for us… they travel, compete, give us great satisfaction; they allow us to experience moments of glory that would not exist without them… their only rewards are carrots and our hugs …”.

Lorenzo adores his mother’s lasagne while his favourite city is Rome. He knows how to play football but does so unwillingly as he is not brilliant and dislikes doing things he does not excel at… ! The first time he travelled to the United States, to Wellington, in Florida, Lorenzo received one of the most special compliments ever when George Morris – the legendary rider and one of the best trainers in the world – took him aside and told him he had the most wonderful hands. He added that in his opinion he was a modern version of Raimondo d’Inzeo.
