Biography

The son of the legendary show jumper and eventer David Goodin, Bruce grew up on a farm in a small village in New Zealand in the Waikato region. Considering he is a rider who has competed in four Olympic Games, Bruce was not very successful as a junior rider. His parents did not want him to miss too many days at school and in any case his seat was not one of the most elegant ones… He quickly made up for lost time and by the time he was twenty he was the country’s best rider after winning the New Zealand Horse/Rider of the Year in 1988. On his way to becoming an Olympic level rider he has got to know and met the highest possible number of trainers, riders and personalities in the equestrian world, trying to understand all their secrets, taking advantage of their advice and methods, which all contributed to creating an approach to horses and to the sport that merges technique, ethology and horsemanship. Among those who forged Bruce Goodin, there are also important riders such as Joe Fargis – an American trainer among the most famous in the world, Conrad Homfeld – the legendary American Olympic rider, Jan Tops – the former Belgian rider and a very important personality in the international equestrian world – and Luca Moneta, known for his natural approach to the sport. Fascinated by how the Italian rider uses the principles of natural equitation set out by the American Pat Parelli to teach horses to jump willingly and not as if obliged, the two men became great friends.
